On Saturday, October 2nd at Edgworth Cricket Club (6 Bolton Road, Turton, Bolton, BL7 0AP), near Bolton from 10.30am – 2.30pm.- part of Edgworth Folk Festival.
Members and Friends of the Nonsuch Dulcimer Club are warmly invited to join ‘Us Northerners’ for some or all of the following activities at this Northern Nonsuch event, which has two very important purposes – to promote dulcimers to the wider public (whether musicians or not) and also to catch up with friends old and new from our wonderful Club, many of whom we have not seen in person for far too long! And, of course, to play some good tunes! (see programme below)
Nonsuch has had a presence at Edgworth Folk Festival for the past 10 years but this year, due to COVID space limitations, we have hired the function room in the Cricket Club, next door to the Festival venue, the Barlow Institute. Lots of space and ventilation. So, if you live close enough (Edgworth is within easy access of the Lancashire M6/M60/M62 corridors, near Bolton), or have plans to perhaps be passing through the area, or walking the West Pennine Moors on Saturday 2nd Oct, it would be really great to see you! www.folkatthebarlow.com/edgworth-folk-festival
We ask if members would be happy to contribute £5 towards room costs. Bar and hot drinks are available at the Cricket Club.
Please bring your own lunch if you wish; food (not Festival-connected) is also available at the Barlow (https://thebarlow.co.uk/the-reading-room (Chris Fitt says “I can recommend their cakes, as my niece bakes ’em!”) The Barlow Institute is a very striking Edwardian building, dating from 1907, now run as a successful local community hub. https://thebarlow.co.uk
Programme
“Come and Try” 10:30 – 12:00 noon
We have invited festival goers and members of the public to try out playing a dulcimer (HD & MD), listen to their captivating sounds and find out about the different types of Mountain and Hammered Dulcimers that are found across the world. Nonsuch members will be there to help, play, explain and chat with each other and with any members of the public who turn up.
Dulcimer-led Festival Tunes Session 12:00 – 1:00pm
Come and join in the music playing your own instrument—it doesn’t have to be a dulcimer. We will be joined by musicians from Edgworth Folk Festival taking place next door at The Barlow. Northern Nonsuch members will lead some of the tunes and songs that we have played over the last 12 months during our zoom music sessions plus some other well known material.
Showcase 1:00 – 2:30pm
This is our opportunity to demonstrate the range of music styles for which dulcimers are used.
